a township sound
After an extended period spent in New Zealand, far from my homeland, South Africa. I found myself grappling with a sense of loss in my identity and a growing disconnect from my South African culture and community. This journey of self-discovery brought me to a remarkable revelation—amapiano music, a genre that has sparked an eagerness within me to reconnect with my roots.

The driving force behind my project is the exploration of whether amapiano is performing a similar role for other South Africans and members of the African diaspora residing in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand). Furthermore, my project seeks to serve as a bridge to introduce this vibrant music genre to a broader audience. Through my lens of photography, I aim to offer a personal point of view and connection to amapiano, allowing viewers to appreciate its vibrancy more deeply.
Approach
My project's methodology includes immersing myself in the local South African and African diaspora communities within Tāmaki Makaurau. Through in-depth interviews, observations, and collaboration, I have sought to uncover the stories and experiences of individuals who, like me, may have found solace and belonging in the beats of amapiano. By exploring the cultural significance and community bonds formed around this genre, my work aims to provide a photographic insight into amapiano's impact on its listeners and the way it unifies a diverse group of people.

The Response
This project will result in a captivating photo book that captures the heart and soul of amapiano in the context of the South African and African diaspora communities in Tāmaki Makaurau. Each photograph encapsulates a unique story, a moment of pure joy, and the essence of belonging that amapiano brings to its listeners. The photo book not only provides a visual slice of amapiano but also introduces the people behind the scenes, showcasing and celebrating the DJs, artists, and passionate fans who are pushing the genre forward.
Conclusion
"A Township Sound" aims to share the viewable experience of music, rekindling one's connection to their cultural roots. This project paints a picture of the universality of music as a binding force that transcends geographical boundaries. The audience can take away not only an appreciation for the amapiano genre, but through photography, they can also see a deeper understanding of the profound role music plays in reconnecting with one's cultural heritage.
